Geospatial Service & Support
Global Consulting International is currently supporting the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service doing geographic information system (GIS) work at the department’s Geospatial Service and Tech Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Geospatial Service and Technology Center (GSTC) is a USDA facility that provides the Forest Service with a range of geographic information products and related technical and training services.
A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. With the information gathered via a GIS, people can visualize and understand data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, reports and charts. A GIS helps answer questions and solve problems by looking at data in a way that can be quickly understood and easily shared. The work being done at the Utah GSTC facility includes:
- Cartographic Feature Files
- Digital Elevation Models
- Digital Orthophoto Quads
- Softcopy Primary Base Series maps (raster map images)
- Hardcopy Primary and Secondary Base Series maps
GCI personnel collect data, examine it, and present the results of that examination in a form that can be shared with others. GCI work providing Geospatial Analysis support includes technical support overseeing incidents and coordinating the facility’s GIS staff and acting as the contact point between center staff and the mapping software company as well as map-production support and modeling.
GCI also provides the design, testing, and implementation used for for data translation workflows on national projects, as well as training and user support for Forest Service personnel working in the geospatial environment. Included in the work GCI is doing for the USDA Forest Service are custom script design and development, troubleshooting, and monitoring test models in an effort to improve current systems and create geospatial tools for the future.
